What was the moment like when they called your name?
I couldn’t take in air because first of all I was trying to look good in my tight, gold, Pamela Dennis dress — the sequins on the side were digging into my skin. I was in such pain. I have never been so overwhelmed and terrified in my life. It was the first win for “West Wing.” I was the first category up for “West Wing,” so I just felt electricity from all the people in my section. It was completely overwhelming and I’m getting chills thinking about it.

What else happened that night?
I remember making the choice to sit on Martin (Sheen)’s lap backstage. It was in the tabloids like “best ass.” I was like “Holy shit!” It made me look so curvaceous, but I actually don’t have much of an ass at all — especially by today’s standards of what a good ass is — it’s really lacking. But that picture made it look like I had a really voluptuous ass. It was just a camera angle and the dress, and it’s a very funny picture.

Emmy- and Oscar-winning actress Ellen Burstyn has landed a whopper of a guest role on Season 3 of Mom — where she’ll play Shirley, the woman who gave birth to Allison Janney’s Bonnie, TVLine has learned.
“She plays Bonnie’s biological mother,” Janney revealed to TVLine Monday night at CBS’ TCA bash, adding that the character’s reappearance — Shirley abandoned her daughter at age four, and hasn’t laid eyes on her since — “upends” Bonnie’s relationship with her own offspring Christy (Anna Faris).

Most actors are happy if they create one character memorable enough to win an Emmy Award. Allison Janney has six of the trophies on her mantelpiece.

“It’s an exciting life I picked, I tell you, and one I didn’t expect,” says the statuesque, 55-year-old actress.

“When I first started out in this business, with my size (she’s 1.83m tall) and whatever, I couldn’t even get arrested in this business.

“I was ecstatically surprised when it turned out there was a place for me in this industry.”

Any doubt about her career choice must have been finally banished last year when she won Emmys for her roles in both Mom and Masters Of Sex, having previously won four times for her work on the political drama The West Wing.

In the television category, Tracy Morgan, Kathy Bates, Debra Messing, Rob Lowe, Roma Downey, Barbara Bain, Gary Sinise, and William S. Paley, the late founder of The Paley Center, will be honored. Inexplicably, Allison Janney also hasn’t had a star until now (trying to make sense of how the Walk Of Fame system works is a futile task, but it largely involves buying in), but the omnipresent goddess will finally get a slab of sidewalk to call her own in 2016. David Duchovny has been having a renaissance year between his book, his music career, kissing, crying, the show you probably haven’t watched, and, oh yeah, that little X-Files revival that’s happening. He, too, will get to stick his hands in some wet cement, so when aliens eventually land in the streets of Hollywood, they’ll know that American humans had some weird as hell traditions.

Melissa McCarthy notched her first No. 1 box-office debut as a leading lady with the $30 million opening of the espionage comedy “Spy,” leaving the guys of “Entourage” in the dust.

The result added to the string of success of McCarthy and writer-director Paul Feig, who first united on the 2011 hit “Bridesmaids.” While “Spy” fell short of the $39.1 million debut of their 2013 comedy “The Heat,” with Sandra Bullock, and came in a tad lower than some predicted, it was good enough to win a weekend lacking blockbuster punch but crowded with action, horror and the resurrected HBO series.

“It sets the table for a fantastic long run,” said Chris Aronson, head of distribution for 20th Century Fox.

The R-rated, action-heavy “Spy,” made for about $65 million, will depend on word-of-mouth and generally glowing reviews to propel it further in the coming weeks. The film, in which McCarthy plays a desk-bound CIA officer sent into a James Bond-like European caper, has already made $56.5 million overseas.
