Academy Award nominee Ellen Page (Juno, Inception) and Emmy winner Allison Janney (Spy, “Mom”) have signed on to star in the dramatic comedy Tallulah, with Sian Heder (“Orange Is the New Black”) having written the screenplay and directing the film.

Tallulah tells the story of a free-spirited young urban adventurer who rescues a baby girl from her spoiled and reckless mom. Page stars as Tallulah or “Lu” who quickly learns that the rest of the world thinks she kidnapped the child. She passes the baby off as her own with the mother of her ex-boyfriend, Margo, a middle-aged divorcé played by Janney. By the time the baby is returned to her rightful owner, all three women will forge an unbreakable bond of motherhood.

“We believe in emotionally charged stories with universal themes,” said Route One’s CEO Russell Levine. “This project has award-winning talent teamed up with a gifted young writer/director who wrote a brilliant script. Ellen Page and Allison Janney will give this film the nuanced comedic and dramatic strength it needs and we’re thrilled to move this project forward.”

Comedies “Mom,” “Mike & Molly” and “2 Broke Girls” have earned early pickups from CBS, although news of the Chuck Lorre sitcoms’ return leaked out via social media a day before the network was formally ready to make the announcement.

“Mom” will be heading into its third season, while “Mike & Molly” will be in its sixth season. “2 Broke Girls,” which is exec produced by Michael Patrick King and Michelle Nader, will be going into its fifth season.

“Mom” has growing critical buzz, and Allison Janney’s Emmy win last year for her work in season one likely sealed the deal. “Mike & Molly,” which stars Melissa McCarthy and Billy Gardell, has been a utility player for the Eye, although there are questions about how long McCarthy will stick with the show once her current deal expires as her film career continues to blossom.

A “work in progress” cut of Judd Apatow’s Trainwreck, starring and written by Amy Schumer, plus the premiere of director Paul Feig’s upcoming Melissa McCarthy action-comedy, Spy, are among the blockbuster titles set to bow at this year’s South by Southwest Film Conference and Festival.

Organizers of the 22nd edition of the annual Austin meet-up, which runs from March 15 to 21, unveiled a diverse slate of 145 films — the most in SXSW history — including 60 from first-time filmmakers and 100 world premieres. The number of films eligible for prizes in juried competition is up to 20 — four more than in previous years.
